Cricket Victoria Life Member – Merv Hughes

September 2, 2012

Footscray Edgewater Cricket Club would like to congratulate Merv Hughes on becoming a Life Member of Cricket Victoria.

He was inducted into the ‘Player category’ for his outstanding service at club, state and national levels. He joins the inaugural inductees Shane Warne, Ian Redpath, Graham Yallop, Dean Jones and Sharon Tredrea in the Player category that was introduced last year.

A lion-hearted fast bowler, Hughes’ 165 first-class matches included 83 appearances for Victoria that reaped 283 wickets at 31.13.

Renowned for his hostile and confrontational spells, there are few players that could have given more for their state or country.

In 53 Tests, Hughes claimed 212 wickets at 28.38.

“It gives you a huge thrill that you’ve been recognised not only what you’ve done as a player, but with my involvement with Victorian cricket since,” Hughes said.

“To play for Victoria and to play in the era that we did and we the players that we did, we had some good times, we had some tough times, and overall it was just a bloody great experience.”

Merv Played 1st XI for Footscray between 1979-80 to 1999-00 taking 306 wickets at 18.86 in 158 matches for the Doggies with best figures of 6/20.

Merv is a Bulldog through and through and is still actively involved at the club helping to developing the whole playing group.

Congratulations Merv!

Vale Allan McGee

August 14, 2012

The club is deeply saddened from the recent passing from one of it’s esteemed life members, Allan McGee.

Allan worked tirelessly over many, many years for our club, volunteering for a range of tasks, however Allan’s legacy to the club was his absolute dedication to the junior sides in the 60’s and 70’s.

Many junior cricketers involved in the club during this period are indebted to the countless hours Allen devoted to Footscray Cricket Clubs junior XI’s.

His involvement undoubtedly enabled a host of junior Footscray cricketers to evolve and develop into senior players at our club and throughout the region.

Allan’s 3 boys, Gary, David and John all played cricket for the Bulldogs.

Allan will be long remembered and sadly missed.

Sincere condolences to Allan’s family
